Harry Potter Themed Birthday Party Ideas

    • In the colorful world presented in the popular "Harry Potter" books by J.K. Rowling, wizards and witches attend Hogwarts to learn more about the wizarding world. If your child can't get enough of the novels and movies, try incorporating his interest in the books into a birthday party theme he'll love.

    Food

    • Use the novels as a source of inspiration for your child's party food. For snacks and appetizers, make lightning-bolt shaped rice krispy treats, jelly beans (Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans if you like), gummy worms, miniature sandwiches cut in the shape of a wizard hat. Serve cream soda in mugs and tell the kids they're drinking the famous Butter Beers in the novel. Or, as Reason to Party suggests, make a Dragon Snot drink out of lime sherbet and lemon-lime soda blended together. For the main course, serve hot soup in cauldron-looking containers. Create a birthday cake in the shape of your child's favorite part about Harry Potter. If she likes Team Gryffindor, make your cake look like the Gryffindor crest. If her favorite character is Professor Lupin the werewolf, shape and decorate your cake to look like a werewolf.

    Decorations

    • The world of Harry Potter will give you plenty of ideas for decorating the party space. Start by hanging purple and gold streamers from the ceilings and walls. Blow up some purple and gold balloons, as well. Within one room, hang the Hogwarts crests for each house on the wall. Create these crests by gathering some felt made of each color for each house (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff). Cut the felt out in the shape of a crest and decorate it with the appropriate colors. Hang the crests on separate corners of the room. Drape a black cloth over the refreshments table and add some gold glitter to the top of it, as well as some gold construction paper cut-outs in the shape of stars and moons. Place a wizard's hat, or the sorting hat, in the middle of the table. Add a black plastic cauldron to the room to add some witchy atmosphere.

    Activities

    • Entertain your guests with some fun straight from the wizarding world. Play games like "Pin the Lightning Bolt on Harry's Face" and "Snape's It," where one player, Snape, basically races to tag other players. For your Harry Potter fanatics, play trivia games to see who knows most about the novels. Set up a Quidditch course in the backyard by adding two goal posts to either end of your yard. Then, divide the children into two teams, giving each of them a House name (i.e. Slytherin, Hufflepuff, etc.) You can make the game more complex if you like by adding all of the teammates (Beaters, Chasers and Seekers) and balls (Bludgers, Quaffles and the Snitch). But for a simpler version, simply send each team to their own side of the field. Place the gold ball in the center of the yard and on the count of three, have the teams try to score a point by sweeping the ball with a broom past the opponent's goal post. The first team to get 10 points wins the game.
