Historical Colonial Houses

The first of the English colonists arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, on May 14, 1607. By the 1700s, the pilgrims established homes in the original 13 colonies.
  • Colonial Style

    • The early colonists settled in cities and towns in the colonies, building homes in the architectural and decorating styles of their motherlands. The American colonial style, therefore, evolved from the early 1700s.

    Evolution

    • The colonial architectural home style remained popular until the American Revolution, when its appeal subsided. The style came back in vogue in the 1880s, and remains popular today.

    Present Day

    • People who want a taste of colonial times can visit the historic area of Colonial Williamsburg. It spans across more than 301 acres and boasts 88 original 18th-century structures. Tourists can visit hundreds of houses, shops and public buildings reconstructed on their original foundations.
