Home Uses for Wind Power

Whether a home is situated in town, connected to the power grid or in a remote setting off the grid, harnessing wind power can effectively and efficiently serve potentially all of your home's energy needs. Wind energy is a free and abundantly renewable resource that---with the properly-sized and positioned wind turbine system---can allow you to tap into it to power lights, appliances and home electronics.

    Lower Utility Bills

    • In exchange for a one-time up-front investment and a willingness to provide much of your own maintenance, wind power can create significant long-term cost savings on a household's utility bills. With a adequately-sized system situated in an area with sufficient wind power, a household can conceivably slash their electricity bill with the local utility company down to zero.

    Provide Emergency Power

    • In case of a power outage in your area, a home wind turbine can provide your household with interim emergency power until the problem in your area is resolved. It is a cleaner and generally more environmentally-friendly alternative to emergency gas, diesel or natural gas generators and while it may cost more to purchase and set up initially, by requiring no fuel source, it saves money to operate.

    Sell Back To The Grid

    • Homes can use wind power to produce a second stream of income. Through the local utility company's renewable energy incentive program, you can sell all surplus wind power back to the utility company. Federal mandates require utility companies to link your home wind power system to the local power grid, though a new meter may need to be installed at your expense.
