How do I Use a Macro 2.8 Lens?

Macro lenses are used for extreme close-up photography. Macros are often used to photograph small subjects, such as insects, or to capture detail close-up, such as the iris of an eye. The number 2.8 refers to the speed of the lens and its fastest aperture number.
  • Choose a Detailed Subject

    • Properly using a Macro lens requires a proper subject. Subjects should be relatively stationary and detailed.

    Steady Yourself

    • Macro lenses are often heavy, so it can be difficult to steady your hand to avoid camera shake. Tripods or using nearby objects to rest an elbow can reduce or eliminate shake.

    Get Close

    • A Macro performs best when it is close to its object. Don't be afraid to get too close for comfort -- instead place the lens 2 to 3 inches from the subject.
