How Does Oil Density Affect Car Efficiency?

Oil density or oil viscosity is the measurement of oil weight. Examples of oil viscosity are 10w30 and 10w40, which describe the oil's properties in winter weather. Nonetheless, oil viscosity is not just a set of numbers, but the required weight for optimal engine performance.
  • Lubrication

    • Oil density directly affects the oil's ability to lubricate the engine. The proper density will keep the engine's moving parts fluid and free of friction and grinding, thus improving engine performance.

    Added Power

    • Engine power is dependent upon the proper engine oil weight. If the engine loses lubrication and increases friction, the engine works harder to pump out the horsepower needed to give power and speed.

    Fuel Economy

    • Oil density affects fuel economy. In terms of viscosity, when the proper density is used in correlation with engine temperature, friction is reduced, increasing fuel economy
