How to Apply for a New Car Title in Colorado

In Colorado, the responsibility to obtain a title for a new car belongs to the dealer who sells it. Car buyers, however, will have to get a new title when they purchase a used car, and can do this easily through their county motor vehicle office.

      Secure all necessary documentation. The seller or dealer should provide you with the required previous title documents, odometer disclosure and bill of sale.

      Have an emissions test performed, if necessary, and obtain a certificate showing the vehicle has passed the Colorado emissions test.

      Have a Colorado law enforcement officer, emissions tester or licensed dealer complete a "Verification of Vehicle Identification Number" form and include that with your documents when applying for a title, if the vehicle was previously titled in a different state.

      Secure adequate liability insurance and have your insurance card, a copy of your policy or a letter from the insurer on company letterhead with your documentation.

      Take all documentation to your local county motor vehicle office (see Resources). Pay vehicle title fees, registration fees and sales tax. Your title will be sent to you or your lien holder within four to six weeks.
