Using A Vinyl Patch
- 1
Cut a piece of vinyl patching material large enough that it covers the damaged area with an inch of extra material on each side. The excess material is for the adhesive.
- 2
Put a piece of paper into the jumper behind the damaged area. This keeps any glue from getting into the damaged area during the repair.
- 3
Open the tube of glue that comes with the repair kit. Squirt a small amount of glue all the way around the outer edge of the vinyl patch. Keep the glue as close to the edge as possible.
- 4
Press the patch over the damaged area. Hold it in place for one minute, so the glue adheres firmly. Let the patch cure overnight before wearing the plastic jumper.
Invisibly Patching Vinyl with a Repair Kit
- 1
Cut away any ragged areas on the damaged area of vinyl. If the damaged area is an even cut, don't cut anything.
- 2
Clean the vinyl with a soapy cloth. Rinse thoroughly with water, and let it dry before starting the repair. This patch doesn't look pretty, but it works well for sealing a jumpsuit.
- 3
Attach a self-adhesive cloth patch inside the jumper, so it holds the vinyl in place. This gives you a backing material for the vinyl repair, and it's invisible from the outside.
- 4
Fill the large damaged area with a piece of vinyl that closely matches the jumper by pressing it into the adhesive cloth patch you pressed on from inside the garment. If it is a small damaged area, 1/2 inch wide or less, don't add extra vinyl to the area.
- 5
Mix the color of vinyl repair paste that you need using the spatula in the kit. The kits include all of the basic colors, but some colors require mixing. Mix a small amount, and smear it on a small piece of cloth. Let it dry, and hold it up to the jumper before applying it to the garment.
- 6
Squish the vinyl repair paste over the damaged area using the spatula included in the kit. Make the layer of paste as thin as possible. Force as much of the material into the cracks as possible. Wipe off any excess vinyl repair paste with an alcohol pad.
- 7
Add texture by placing the texture sheet on top of the wet vinyl repair mixture with the texture facing down. The pattern sets once the material is heat set or dries, depending on the kit you purchased.
- 8
Heat set the vinyl repair material if required, following the instructions included in your kit. Every kit is different, so check your instructions. Some kits come with a heating tool, some require blow dryers and other kits require heat guns.
- 9
Let the vinyl repair dry for 30 minutes. If you want a high gloss to the vinyl, rub paste floor wax over it, and buff with a soft cloth. If you want a dull look, buff it gently with fine meshed steel wool.
