How to Attach an Answering Machine to a Phone

An answering machine is still a good way to get messages you may have missed because you were away from your phone. There are many styles of answering machines that have been available, including dual cassette models, single cassette, mini cassette and digital. One common thing about all these machines is the basic way you attach them to your phone.

  Locate the phone cable coming out of your wall and connected to your existing phone. Unplug the cable from the phone.

  Take the wire from the wall and plug it in to the "Input" or "Line In" on your answering machine.

  Take an additional telephone cable and connect it to your phone where the previous cable coming from your wall was disconnected. You may have to purchase additional telephone cable.

  Connect the phone cable that is plugged into your phone and connect it to the "Output" or "Line Out" on your answering machine.

  Plug in the power cord from the answering machine to the wall outlet and turn on the machine.
