How to Attract Nightcrawlers With Sticks

Night crawlers, another word for earth worms, originated in Europe but are now common in the United States. They are somewhat fragile and are not able to survive in temperatures below 65F, or in water. Nevertheless, they are very popular with anglers who covet them as bait because of their size. Usually about 3 inches long, they have also been known to grow to a strapping 14 inches. Various methods exist for catching them, and they all involve the night time when they become active and feed above ground, which is also why they are called night crawlers.

  Water the ground lightly with a hose or sprinkler, or, if you are not on your own grounds, with a watering can. You don't want to get the ground sopping wet, so try to use something with a nozzle.

  Drive the stick several feet into the ground with the help of the brick or rock, if needed.

  Run the teeth of the saw over the top of the wooden stick. The vibrations will soon prompt the night crawlers to stick their heads out of the ground. Don't stop what you are doing until they are completely above ground.

  Stop creating vibrations for them and start picking up all the night crawlers you need, and place them into the container you brought.
