How to Break Down a Waterproof Fabric Barrier

Durable water-repellent finishes are applied to fabrics and clothing to help waterproof them. This creates a barrier between the fabric and water. Although water-repellent finishes are not permanent, once applied they can be difficult to remove. There is no magic product or cleaning agent which will remove the barrier instantly. The barrier will break down over time and with repeated washings.

Set the washing machine settings to a cold or warm water setting, on a regular cycle.

    • 2

Add a powdered bleach- and chlorine-free laundry detergent to the washing machine. Adding fabric softener is not recommended. Although it can clog the pores on waterproof fabric and decrease the effectiveness, it can also get stuck in the fabric's pores, leaving behind a soap residue.

Remove the waterproof fabric from the washing machine when the cycle is complete.

    • 4

Tumble dry the fabric on low heat or allow the fabric to air dry.

    • 5

      Repeat the process several times.
