How to Care for African Micro Braids

Style versatility and low maintenance are two reasons micro braids are a popular style of braids. Micro braids are a way to give the hair a break from daily styling and damage caused by frequent combing and heat use. When properly cared for, micro braids can aid hair growth by protecting the hair ends and preventing breakage. Although initial application can take six hours or more, these braids can last for months with proper care.
  • Washing

    • 1

Dilute a quarter sized drop of shampoo in a cup of water. Wet your braids and scrub the scalp lightly with the pads of your fingers to loosen dead skin and build-up.

    • 2

Pour the mixture over your braids and use the pads of your fingers to gently wash your scalp. Squeeze the length of the braids with both hands to shampoo the extensions and your hair.

    • 3

Allow clean water to run over your head as you rinse. Squeeze the braids under the clean water to rinse out the shampoo.

    • 4

Turn off the water and squeeze excess moisture from the braids. Wrap the hair in a towel to absorb additional moisture. Apply a leave in condition or moisturizing braid spray to your scalp and the length of the braids.

    Daily Care

    • 1

Apply a moisturizing braid spray to the extensions and your hair daily. Use a light spray to avoid build-up that can accumulate around the base of your braids.

    • 2

Apply a light oil to your scalp once or twice a week. Oiling more frequently can result in greasy build-up around the base of your braids.

    • 3

Wrap your braids in a silk or satin scarf at night before going to bed. This prolongs the life of your braids and prevents your bed linens from pulling moisture from your hair.
