How to Change a Logon Password

A logon password is a vital security measure that allows you to keep unauthorized people from using your computer. In this day and age when security breaches are a constant problem, it is ideal to ensure you have strong and effective computer security. Whether you are using a Mac or PC, you can change your logon password anytime you want to decrease the chances of security problems.
  • Windows 7 and Vista

      Logon on to your Windows account using your current administrator password.

      Press "Ctrl," "Alt," and "Delete" together. A dialog box launches. Click the "Change a Password" button. A new window launches.

      Type your old administrator password and then type the new password you want to use. Use at least 8 characters for your password to increase its strength. Type your new password again and press "Enter" to save your changes.

      Log off your computer and enter your new password.

    Mac Leopard Users

      Logon onto your account using your current administrator password.

      Click the "Apple" logo in the top left corner and click "Preferences." Click "Accounts." A new dialog box launches.

      Click the "Change Password" button, enter your old password, and then enter your new password. Type the password hint you want to use in case you forget your password, and then click "Change Password" to save your changes.
