How to Change the Password on a WRT-54GS2

Wireless Internet first became popular in the early 2000s. Since then, it has become nearly ubiquitous: Bookstores, coffee shops and airports are only a few examples of areas in which public wireless Internet is available. Wireless Internet allows for greater mobility and ease of connectivity to a network; computers can connect to the network without wires, and those using them can move the computers around without fear of losing the connection. It is wise to always keep a network password protected, to keep the data secure and the network from overflowing with unwanted users.

Connect your computer to your router via an Ethernet cable.

    • 2

Enter your router's setup console via your Internet browser. The IP for this router's setup console is 192.168.1.1. If you have not yet set a username and password for the setup console, use "admin" (minus the quotation marks) in the "User Name" field and leave the "Password" field blank.

    • 3

Click on the "Wireless" tab. Select "Wireless Security."

    • 4

Erase the password in the "Key" field (this will be called WEP Key, WPA Shared Key, etc., based on which encryption scheme you are using).

    • 5

Enter a new password and click on "Save Settings." Your wireless router will automatically restart in order to apply the changes.
