How to Change the Screen Saver on Windows XP

Computer screen savers once prevented damage to older computer monitor models. Now they simply provide an interesting and dynamic image to view as a computer idles. You may have grown tired of your screen saver. You can change the screen saver in Windows XP using the operating system's built-in desktop customization options.

      Open the "Start" menu from the Windows XP task bar located on the lower-left corner of the desktop. Select "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu.

      Double-click "Appearance and Themes" in the Windows XP control panel and and then click "Display." The "Display Properties" window appears.

      Click the "Screen Saver" tab on the "Display Properties" menu.

      Click the pull-down menu under "Screen Saver" and select the screen saver that you would like to use. If you cannot tell the screen savers apart using their names, click the "Preview" button to view the selected screen saver.

      Click "OK" to save the change and return to the desktop.
