How to Change a Taillight on a 2005 Dodge Dakota

The taillights on your Dakota help other motorists see the rear of your vehicle at night and alert them to braking, lane changes and reverse movement. Over time, the light bulbs in your Dodge Dakota will wear out, necessitating their replacement. These bulbs can be found in most automotive parts stores at a low price. Most jurisdictions require functioning taillights, and most will cite you with a fine if you operate the Dakota without them on public roads.

  Identify the taillight bulb that needs changing. Have a partner apply the brake, backup and turn signal lights while you observe the taillights at the back of the Dakota.

  Drop the Dakota's tailgate and locate the retaining screws for the taillight assembly along the side of the latch area. Remove these screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

  Pull the taillight assembly out of the truck's body. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise until it unlocks, and pull it out of the assembly. Pull the old bulb out of the socket and dispose of it properly.

  Place the new bulb into the socket. Insert the socket back into the taillight assembly and turn the socket clockwise to lock it into place.

  Slide the taillight assembly into the truck's body and secure the assembly with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws with the Phillips screwdriver and close the tailgate.

  Inspect the taillights to ensure their proper function. Have a partner apply the brake, backup and turn signal lights while you observe the lights at the back of the Dakota.
