How to Clean Silver Plated Candlesticks

Silver plated candlesticks are a centerpiece for many dining tables and other areas of the home. They provide a subtle, traditional display. Just like any other silver object, the candlesticks become tarnished and soiled on occasion. You must use a mild cleaning solution that gets all of the buildup off of the candlesticks without harming the silver plating.

  Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Use enough water to submerge the candlesticks and keep the water line at least 3 inches under the top rim of the pot.

  Place a large skillet on another burner and line the bottom with a large sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side up.

  Place all of the candlesticks into the pan. Make sure they are all touching the foil somewhere.

  Pour baking soda into the pot of boiling water. Add 1 cup of baking soda per gallon of water. Stir the water with a large spoon to dissolve the soda.

  Slowly pour the water into the large skillet. Add water until the skillet is full and the candlesticks are submerged as much as possible.

  Turn the candlesticks with tongs every three minutes so a new area of the candlestick touches the foil. Continue for 15 minutes.

  Remove the candlesticks from the water one at a time. Rinse each with hot water and dry with a soft cloth to restore the shine of the silver plating.
