How to Copy an Image Backup
A common method of backing up your computer's hard drive is to create an image file of it. Image files contain an exact copy of the source used to create them, and can be opened as a virtual drive with virtual drive software. This file can be copied to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, shared on a network or emailed, provided the file is not too large for your email client to send. Image files are identified by the extension "ISO."
