How to Cut Clay Pavers

There are two popular ways of cutting clay pavers. One is with the use of a specialized diamond-tipped power saw and the other is with the more manually operated guillotine or a block splitter. Clay pavers are more complex in texture compared to concrete, which is why most masons cut them with utmost care. Modern, stylish houses and buildings can have a more sober, countryside appeal when clay pavers are used for their walls and pavements.
  • Cutting with a Power Saw

    • 1

Mark the areas you want to cut on the surface of the clay pavers with a pencil. Dip the brick in water for three seconds to prevent the dust from flying into the air when sawed.

    • 2

Place the clay paver under the power saw. Be certain that the blade is aligned with the markings on the paver.

    • 3

Hold the paver steady with one hand and turn on the power saw with the other. While the saw is already in action, hold the brick with your two hands and guide it under the blade. Slowly run the brick forward and backward under the rotating blade until it is cut in two.

Cutting with a Guillotine or Block Splitter

    • 1

Mark the area you want to cut with a pencil.

    • 2

Place the paver under the blade of the guillotine. Note that the blade should be parallel with the marks on the paver.

    • 3

Hold the guillotine steady with your hand. Pull the lever of the guillotine downward, firmly and quickly.
