How to Cut a Shag Hairstyle

Since the 1970s, the shag has been a popular haircut style. It is an easy to care for style that frames the face softly instead of harshly the way a style with bangs or a fringe would. The shag keeps the hair short but remains both attractive and feminine. Usually daily care is not more than running a brush through the hair and fluffing it a bit.

Wet the hair thoroughly with a spray bottle and comb it out to remove any knots or tangles.

Have the person receiving the cut lie down on her back flat on top of a counter top with her hair running down the vertical side. Comb her hair again so it hangs straight down as smooth as possible.

Make a long, horizontal cut with hair scissors across the hair using the hair from her crown as a guide. If the finished shag should have the shortest layer at 6 inches long, make the cut 6 inches down from her head.

Comb out the hair after she sits up on a chair and make the part wherever she wants to wear it.

Pick up small sections of hair from either side of her head and hold them straight up to check that they are even. Make sure the hair is taken from the same spot on either side of her head.

Cut down the bangs by holding them flat and cutting up toward the part line at a 45-degree angle.
