How to De-clutter Children's Rooms

Children's toys, books and games can quickly accumulate and make their bedroom a cluttered mess. De-cluttering your child's room will make it easier for her to locate toys to play with and to put them away when she is done. With the help of your child, pick a time to sort through her belongings, donate those that are not being used, and organize the rest. A clutter-free bedroom will be easier to keep clean, will stay clean longer and will present fewer safety hazards..

Sort through toys, games and books with your child, choosing to save items that are still used, and donating items that are outgrown.

    • 2

Sort through clothing, making piles of clothes to keep, donate and store.

    • 3

Install low shelving, or possibly a cubby-style bookcase, to house toys, games and books. This makes them easy to see and access when your child wants to play.

    • 4

Organize books into bins and place them on the shelves. Sort them by level or theme.

    • 5

Put similar toys together into bins, for example, one bin for stuffed animals, another for balls and another for art supplies.

    • 6

Label all bins with a permanent marker or a tag.

    • 7

Sort through all games and puzzles, making sure the pieces are all intact. Put all small pieces in plastic bags, then store games in boxes or bins on shelves low enough for kids to access.

    • 8

Label bins or drawers for T-shirts, pants, socks, underwear and shoes. Fold the articles of clothing and place them in the bins or drawers. Clear bins work nicely for this so you can see all the clothes.

    • 9

Clothes that need to be hung up can go in the closet. Consider lowering the bar so your child can hang her own clothes.
