How to Determine a GM VIN Code

The VIN code, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a string of numbers and letters that is used to identify a particular model of vehicle. To determine the VIN code for a GM, you will first need to find its location. This is typically found in the same location for all types of vehicles. Once the VIN has been found, you then need to read it correctly to obtain information about the vehicle.
  • Locate the VIN

    • 1

Go to the driver's side of the vehicle.

    • 2

Look for a small clear square that is in the lower corner of the windshield, on the dash. You should see a 17-digit string of letters and numbers.

    • 3

Write the string of letters and numbers on a piece of paper or a notepad.

    Reading the VIN

    • 1

Read the first character of the VIN. The first number is the country where the vehicle was manufactured. The United States uses a 1 or a 4.

    • 2

Read the second character of the VIN. This character should be a "G," which signifies that the vehicle was manufactured by GM.

    • 3

Read the tenth character of the VIN. This character identifies the model year of the vehicle.
