How to Disable the Low Ink Pop Up on HP

Although the low-ink pop-up message on an HP printer or all-in-one machine can be a legitimate warning, occasionally the message will display on your computer screen when you are quite certain there is plenty of ink. It can malfunction for a number of different reasons in various HP models. Although you can still print with a false low-ink warning, there are steps you can take to disable the message.

Remove and reinstall the print cartridge if you installed one or both with the power off. All HP printers must be on when installing ink cartridges.

Replace the service station, the part that stops the ink when the printer is not active, on HP Officejet C2890A, LX and 300 models. The part needed is C4661-60297. See the Resources section for information on how to purchase HP parts.

Manually reset the counter after installing ink on the Officejet 500 and 600. The 700 model Fax 910 and 920 also need to be reset manually. Be sure the printer is on, remove the cartridge and reinsert it. A message, "Press 1 for new cartridge or press 2 for a used cartridge," should appear. Press "1."

Open the printer cartridge cover, then unplug the power cord if the low-ink message still appears on these models. Take out the ink, then replug the cord. A message should appear telling you to reload the ink. Reinsert the cartridge and the "Press 1 for new cartridge" message should appear. Press "1."

Turn on the printer and open the print cartridge door on all other HP models. Take out the cartridges and wipe the contact points with a soft cloth to remove any grease that might be blocking contact. Unplug the power cord, wait 5 seconds, replug it and reinstall the cartridges.
