How to Encode a Black & White DVD

DVD rippers and encoders have broad functionality. Not only can they back up your entire DVD collection to just about any format available, but they can even alter the video as it encodes so you wind up with something that looks totally different than what you started with. This is accomplished using filter effects, and to encode a color DVD to black-and-white, you use a filter effect called "grayscale." You can download this filter as a plug-in for use with some DVD encoders, while other DVD encoders include it natively.

  Place the DVD you want to encode in the DVD drive on your computer. If you already have a DVD image or VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive, skip this step.

  Double-click the desktop icon for the DVD-burning software to launch it. If there is no desktop icon for the software, click the "Start" button, "All Programs" and your DVD-burning program from the programs list.

  Click "Open" or "Source" in the DVD-burning software. Browse to the folder or disc drive where the DVD is stored and click the image file or folder to load it. In VLC, click "Media," "Convert/Save," then either the "File" or "Disc" tab. Click the DVD file or folder and click "Convert/Save."

  Click "Video Filters" in the DVD-burning software and check the box next to "Grayscale."

  Click "Start" or "Encode" to begin encoding. The resulting video will be black-and-white.
