How to Enforce a Code of Conduct

Enforcing a code of conduct is accomplished effectively when there are personnel responsible for its implementation. Since each employee brings their own personal set of values, each organization must impart its values to help move the company strategically. For instance, enforcing a code of conduct requires consequences that are clearly explained and applied when anyone breaks the rules. Establishing a binding agreement helps remind workers of their oath to uphold certain principles. Also, monitoring behavior and providing rewards to those who comply helps enforce a code of conduct.

      Create a code of conduct agreement for employees to sign to verify that the code of conduct was read and accepted. In the business world, all staff members should sign the agreement.       Champion the employees who are following the code of conduct. Give them special attention during a meeting and bestow benefits in front of their peers. The sense of reward can help encourage others to strive for compliance as well.

      Monitor employee habits with the help of a compliance officer. Use software and other technology to aid in this project. For instance, cameras are helpful aids to ensure that employees follow guidelines for break times. Inform employees about the monitoring and tell them the consequences for a lack of compliance.

      Empower management to effectively reprimand anyone that goes against the code of conduct. Create an open-door policy for workers who know of rules being broken. Treat everyone the same when enforcing the code of conduct.
