How to Find Love in Loneliness

Loneliness among people is a common affliction and people often feel unloved when they are single or not in a serious relationship. According to the book "Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection," being socially isolated can cause harm equivalent to the negative physical effects induced by smoking and a sedentary lifestyle. Feelings of isolation can lead to serious mental consequences such as sadness and depression as well. There are links between depression, the risk of nervous breakdown and even suicide. Being alone, however, does not necessarily mean you have to be lonely and unloved. Take specific steps to feel less isolated even when you are alone.

      Improve your self-esteem. In order to attract love into your life, you need to love yourself first. Being alone allows you to get to know yourself and what makes you happy or sad. Being alone for a time gives you a chance to be silent and look inward. Try to become aware of the things that make you happy. Find inner contentment that might draw people to you.

      Actively pursue your interests. By doing things you love, you will likely surround yourself with others who share your interests. In addition, stay physically active to increase the release of natural endorphins such as serotonin that induce feelings of well-being and decrease anxiety and depression.

      Connect with family and friends. According to The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, loneliness can spread when you allow yourself to become socially isolated. Romantic love and platonic love are two different things. Love you feel for family and friends can be fulfilling if you cultivate and nurture it to encourage the growth of love.

      Learn to meet your own emotional needs. Get therapy if necessary to help you understand your feelings of loneliness and learn methods such as self-love and positive self-talk to increase feelings of self worth. Tell yourself daily that you are loved. In addition, repeat positive affirmations every day to bring love into your life.
