How to Find Out the Distance Walked

You can use a pedometer to find out the distance you walk. There are several different types of pedometers on the market. They can be simple devices that measure the number of steps taken or especially complex ones that can be programmed to your individual stride length and can measure a variety of things. To measure the distance walked, you must have a digital model that has this feature.

Calculate the length of your steps. Set your pedometer to measure the number of steps walked. Wear the device and walk a known distance, such as one time around a quarter-mile track. Divide the known distance you have walked in feet by the number of steps you have taken. A quarter mile is 1,320 feet. So, for example, if the pedometer counts 711 steps, divide, 1,320 feet by 711 steps, so each step is 1.85 feet long.
