How to Finish the Edge of Polar Fleece

Polar fleece is a soft, cozy man-made fabric that is used for winter wear, blankets, jackets and camping gear. It is lightweight, durable, warm and easy to work with. As such, many people choose to make their own polar fleece projects. The material does not unravel like most other fabrics, so finishing the edge of polar fleece isn't necessary. That said, a finished edge creates a more professional, tidy look and can be added with little effort.

Create a decorative fringe around the edge of the fleece project by snipping 1 inch into the fleece. After your first snip, move over 1/2 inch then snip in toward the center of the project again. Keep snipping every 1/2 inch until you have a fringe around the entire piece.

Set your sewing machine to a zig-zag stitch setting and stitch around the perimeter of the fleece for a clean, finished edge.

Use your serger to create a finished edge. Feed the fleece into the serger and stitch around the perimeter of the fleece.

Create a professional-looking hem by folding the edges over 1 inch then top stitching the fold in place.
