How to Fix Discolored Concrete Due to it Being Covered

Discoloration of concrete can occur for a number of reasons, one of which is long term covering of the slab with another material. Plastic tarps, wood piles, or other objects that cover the concrete can leach color into the concrete, making it look dirty or dingy. The easiest way to remove discoloration is with regular hot water. If this doesn't work, you can try more abrasive acidic solutions.

Remove the covering from the concrete and sweep the area completely.

    • 2

Fill a 5-gallon bucket with hot water and pour it over the discoloration. Scrub the stain with a stiff bristled scrub brush.

    • 3

Rinse the area with water from a garden hose. Refill the bucket with hot water, pour the water over the discoloration, and scrub the area again. Repeat until the discoloration looks lifted, then let the concrete dry overnight. Check the next morning to see if the discoloration remains.

Put on protective gloves and goggles.

Pour a 1 percent solution of hydrochloric acid directly onto the discolored area. Let it sit for ten minutes, then flush the area completely with water from a garden hose. The acid will remove the discoloration if the hot water does not.
