How to Fix Scratches in Plastic Laminate

A plastic laminate consists of two or more layers of plastic material bonded together. To fix scratches in a plastic laminate countertop, use a laminate repair solution that can be purchased from any hardware store. A couple of household supplies also are needed. The procedure fills in the scratches, making them less noticeable to the eye and less visible on the surface of the laminate.

Put on the work gloves. Apply acetone solution to a clean side of the lint-free cloth. Wipe the surface where the scratches are with the cloth. Let the surface dry for at least one hour.

    • 2

Squeeze some laminate repair solution onto a putty knife. Place the side of the putty knife that has the laminate repair solution on it against the scratch on the surface of the plastic laminate.

Draw the putty knife across the scratch so as to deposit the laminate repair solution into the scratch. Repeat this action with the putty knife until you can see that the laminate repair solution is beginning to harden. Let the laminate repair solution harden for at least 30 minutes before proceeding.

Repeat the entire procedure with fresh laminate repair solution if the solution has not hardened so as to be even with the surface of the plastic laminate.
