How to Frame a Frameless Mirror

Mirrors have long been a great addition to the decor of a room. Not only do they brighten up a space by reflecting light, they also make the room appear more spacious. While frameless mirrors achieve the same results, the addition of a frame creates a more polished and stylish design. Fortunately, the task isn't too difficult to complete and all the supplies should be readily available at a local hardware store.

Visit the local hardware store to collect your supplies. Select a wood trim that you like but make sure it's flat and will sit flush against the mirror. Simple, smooth wood trims will create a sleeker modern frame, while trims with ridges and other decorative touches will add more character to the piece. If you plan to simply stain or seal the wood, make sure the tone will match your current decor.

Measure the mirror's dimensions. Cut the trim into four pieces, two pieces for the length and two for the width. Using a miter saw, cut the ends at a 45-degree angle so all the pieces will fit together to create the frame.

Using a fine grit sandpapper, lightly sand the wood trim and wipe away the dust.

To achieve good coverage, apply two coats of paint or stain, making sure to allow plenty of drying time between coats. When applying stain, follow the grain of the wood to bring out the trim's natural lines and beauty. If painting, make sure to apply thin even coats and keep an eye out for drips.

Both painted and stained trim can be customized to match your decor. Consider adding hand painted details or stenciling. Another option is to lightly sand the edges of the trim again to give the mirror a shabby chic look.

Use the wood adhesive to attach the finished trim to the mirror. If the mirror is larger, it may be helpful to enlist some help at this step to make sure the trim positioned correctly before the glue begins to set.
