How to Get an Emergency List Together

Putting together a list of emergency supplies to grab at a moment's notice can mean the survival of yourself and family members, and it takes only some basic preparation. During an emergency, such as a natural disaster, is not the time to organize a survival list and hope for good results. Preparedness and careful planning are key to surviving when an emergency occurs.

Prepare a list of the items you would need. These include ready-to-eat food in sealed, sterile pouches; safe drinking water in pouches, matches, flashlights and batteries, hygiene kits, a whistle, basic first aid supplies, paper towels, prescription medicines, eating utensils, a pan and a survival knife.

Gather the items from your list in quantities to last each family member a minimum of three days.

    • 3

Assign each person his own survival pack. A lightweight backpack or even a 5-gallon plastic bucket with a lid and a liner is ideal for a grab-and-go emergency situation.

    • 4

Pack the items from your list into your survival packs.

    • 5

Double-check your list to ensure you didn't forget essential items.

    • 6

      Seal your survival packs.

    • 7

Place your survival packs in a cool, dry place that is convenient and visible for a fast grab-and-go exit.
