How to Get a New Number Plate

A number plate is the British equivalent of a license plate; a vehicle registration number is engraved into the plate and affixed to the vehicle. If your license plate is lost, stolen or damaged, you may want to get a new one made. Only registered number plate suppliers are authorized to make new number plates. You'll need to provide proof that you are entitled to receive a particular plate when you visit the supplier.

Gather your documents. You'll need two documents: one proof of identity and one proof of vehicle ownership. Acceptable proof of identity includes driving license, utility or telephone bill, council tax bill issued within six months or rates bill, statement from a bank or building society, passport, national identity card, debit or credit card, police warrant card or armed forces identity card. Acceptable proof of vehicle ownership includes vehicle registration certificate, the new keeper supplement of the registration certificate, certificate of entitlement, retention document, vehicle license renewal form, temporary visiting vehicle registration card, temporary registration certificate, authorization certificate or a letter of authorization from a fleet operator.
