How to Get Out Toner Stain

Toner from printer cartridges or photocopier cartridges is a fine powder that lodges easily between fabric and carpet fibers. Treated properly toner will not permanently stain, but you should remove it as quickly as possible to limit the possibility that the stain sets. You do not need special ingredients to get toner stains out of fabric, but you will need to be patient as it may take several attempts to completely remove the stain.
  • Carpeting or Upholstered Surfaces

    • 1

Vacuum any loose toner using the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Heat from the vacuum cleaner can cause the toner to set into the fabric.

    • 2

Mix 1 tbsp. liquid dish soap into 2 cups cold water. Dab the mixture onto the toner stain with a sponge.

    • 3

Blot the stained area with a clean, dry towel.

    • 4

Repeat sponging the dish soap mixture onto the toner stain until the stain is completely removed. Do not scrub at the stain because it will cause the stain to spread outward.

    • 5

Rinse the area with cold water once the toner stain is completely removed.

    • 6

Blot the area with a clean, dry towel until it is dry. Do not use heated methods to dry the area unless you are certain no toner remains.

    Clothing

    • 1

Shake off as much of the toner as possible. You can also brush it off using a soft-bristled brush or a dry towel.

    • 2

Dab undiluted liquid laundry detergent directly onto the toner marks. Use your fingers to work the detergent into the stain.

    • 3

Wash the clothing in cold water only. Heat can set toner stains permanently.

    • 4

Examine the clothing carefully after washing to be sure the stain is completely washed out. Do not put the clothing into your dryer until you are certain there is no toner left on the fabric. If the stain is not completely gone, wash the clothing again in cold water.
