More home phone users are utilizing VoIP, or "voice over Internet protocol" service. VoIP service uses the Internet to transmit your voice and requires a high-speed Internet connection. Getting a VoIP number simply requires you to sign up with a VoIP service provider.

      Click the links to the providers to review their products, terms of services and plans.

      Choose a service. Consider costs, availability in your area, special features and cancellation options.

      Sign up with a provider. Some providers will allow you to order service directly from their website; others require you to call in and order your service. You'll typically have to supply your name, phone number, physical address and sometimes an email address. You'll receive a VoIP number at some point during the sign-up process.
