Expediting a Passport Application
- 1
Obtain evidence of your U.S. citizenship. This may be a certified birth certificate, consular report of birth abroad, naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship. Birth certificates can be issued by the city, county or state where you were born. Prepare a photocopy of the document. A previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport can also be used.
- 2
Get two head shot photos. The photos must be identical, 2 by 2 inches in size, taken in normal street attire and within the last six months. The photo should show your whole face on a white or off-white background.
- 3
Complete Form DS-11 (Application for U.S. Passport). The form is available to download from the Department of State website or at most post offices. Libraries and municipal, county and state offices also may have the application. The application may be handwritten.
- 4
Determine your nearest passport acceptance facility by using the location finder on the Department of State website. If you are traveling within 14 days you may schedule an appointment at 1-877-487-2778.
- 5
Present your documents, photos and a government-issued ID such as a driver's license. Pay a passport fee of $110 (additional $25 for first-time applicants) and a $60 expedite fee. Fees may be paid using credit cards or checks, including personal checks. Applicants are also encouraged to pay an additional $14.96 for overnight delivery of the passport.
- 6
The Passport Agency has committed to process the passport within five business days from receipt of the application. Application status can be tracked via the Department of State website.
