How to Glue Gold Leaf

Gold leaf is actual pure gold that is compressed and liquidized to form a roll of foil or a type of paint that is used for decorative functions. Its use can transform a simple piece of furniture or a picture frame into a work of art that can be a family heirloom. Gold leaf correctly done is both beautiful and a lovely complement for any style of furniture. Practice using other media and then go on to the actual gold leafing process to make an heirloom for your grandchildren's grandchildren.

Delineate the area you want to apply the gold leaf foil on using a pencil or other marking tool. The marks should be clear so you can easily see them while you work.

    • 2

Spread the foil glue over the marked areas. Follow the lines carefully. If you get glue anywhere you shouldn't, wipe it away with a cloth quickly to avoid messing up the gold leaf later on.

    • 3

Leave the glue to become tacky to the touch for at least one hour. If you are working with a lot of glue, the waiting time may take as much as eight hours.

    • 4

Set the piece of gold leaf foil directly on top of the glue with the colored side facing up. Use a squeegee to press the foil firmly down onto the glue and remove any air bubbles.

    • 5

Grip a loose edge of the piece of foil and peel it smoothly away from the surface. Try not to dislodge any of the glue pieces of foil as you move the excess away.

Apply more glue and re-foil any spots that didn't get leaf properly. Follow the same directions however many times you need to do it.
