How to Grow & Harvest Wheat Grass Juice

Wheat grass juice is considered a complete food because it contains vital amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are necessary for the human body. It also contains chlorophyll, vitamins A and C, and may increase energy, strengthen the immune system and improve digestion. Growing your own wheat grass at home is cost effective and ensures the freshest grass for harvesting.

Growing Wheat Grass

  Place 1 cup of wheat grass seeds in a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water just to cover the seeds and let soak for 12 hours. Drain the seeds in a colander lined with paper towels and then rinse. Let the seeds set in the colander for another 12 hours, then rinse and set aside one more time. After doing this three times, the seeds should have sprouted, meaning they are ready to plant.

  Fill a seed tray with organic potting soil. Spray the soil with water to moisten clear through. Spread the sprouted wheat grass seeds evenly over the top of the soil. Do not push the seeds down into the soil.

  Spray the seeds with water to moisten without washing out the seeds. Cover the top of the tray loosely with plastic wrap. Set the tray in an out-of-the-way place, away from direct sunlight, for about five days. Spray the soil twice a day to keep moist.

  Remove the plastic covering after about five days or once the sprouted grass begins to push it off. Set the tray in front of a sunny window. Keep the grass watered once a day by setting the tray in a container of water so the grass is watered from the bottom.

Harvesting Wheat Grass

  Harvest the wheat grass after about 10 to 14 days after planting or when it reaches 7 to 8 inches tall. This is when the grass is at its optimal nutritional value.

  Cut the grass right above the soil, trimming only as much as needed. A 6-inch square of grass is sufficient for one person to juice and consume.

  Place the remaining grass in the refrigerator to store until ready to use. Placing the tray inside a plastic bag keeps it fresher longer.
