Remove grass, weeds, rocks and debris from the selected planting site.

Dig a basin-shaped hole that is 6 inches deep. Line the hole with 4 to 6 mil polyethylene. Add a 2-inch layer of peat moss.

Sprinkle the watercress seeds over the peat moss and use a rake to cover the seeds to a depth of 1/4 inch.

Water until the soil is very moist. Continue to add water as often as necessary to keep the soil very moist to the touch.

Raise the water level approximately 1/2 inch each day after the seedlings begin to appear. Continue to add water until the bottom half of the seedlings are completely submerged in water.

Add moisture as often as necessary to maintain the water level and to keep the water from becoming stagnant.

Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is a perennial member of the mustard family that occurs naturally in streams, ditches and ponds. The leaves of watercress are used to garnish meals and in salads. It is also used in homeopathic remedies to treat ailments including headaches, hot flashes and canker sores. The roots of watercress must be submerged in water at all times and it does best in a location that receives partial sun.
