How to Handle the Legal End for Shipping a Motorcycle

Shipping a motorcycle is a highly regulated process that is enforced by various government agencies. Whether your motorcycle is traveling via ground, air, or sea, you must comply with regulations given by the corresponding agency based on the mode of transport. A freight forwarder (a third party company that specializes in shipping freight) will handle all legal procedures of shipping your motorcycle. However, you must provide any requested documentation and must verify that the information is accurate and true.

Prepare motorcycle to ship by taking detailed photos of all areas of bike. Photos show the current condition of bicycle prior to being shipped. Make sure bike is upright, tires are inflated, in neutral gear, and keys are not in ignition. If bike is used, the gas tank must be less than 1/4 full.

Prepare all required documentation to ship motorcycle. If bike is brand new, you will need to show proof of ownership (such as a commercial invoice or certificate of title). If bike is used, and you are not the current lien holder, you must obtain permission to ship bike from the actual lien holder.

Look through a listing of local freight forwarders, or shipping companies, that can help you ship your bike. Contact companies to compare prices and services. Select which level of insurance you need and specify your mode of transport (land, air, or ocean.) Used motorcycles will generally not be shipped by air due to dangerous goods regulations as stated by IATA (International Air Transport Association).

Select the shipping company that best suits your needs to pick up and deliver your bike to the desired destination. Shipping companies that specialize in only in shipping motorcycles and vehicles offer the most reliable service. Book your shipment and prepay using check, money order, or a credit card.

Tender all required documents to shipping company to include: Commercial Invoice, Certificate of title (or proof of ownership), and permission to ship motorcycle (if necessary). If bike is being shipped to international destination, an additional Certificate of Origin is required. This can be obtained at your local chamber of commerce.
