Research online or in magazines to find a highlight color you like. Think of celebrities with light blonde hair like yours and see how they have their hair highlighted. There are several websites now that will allow you to upload your own picture and manipulate it with different looks to see which appear best. Keep in mind when looking for a highlighting color that professionals recommend choosing a color two shades lighter than your own tresses. This is a tip for if you want a natural, sun-kissed look.

Buy the hair color you like best. Most grocery stores and shopping chains like Walmart, K-Mart, and Walgreen's carry highlighting kits for highlighting your own hair from home. Also, check the expiration date on the box.

Do not shampoo or use hair products the day your plan to highlight your hair because it can interfere with the chemicals of the dye and cause it to not stick as well. Professionals recommend using a clarifying shampoo on your hair two days before coloring, however it is not required.

Read all of the directions that come with the coloring prior to mixing the chemicals. Sometimes directions can be confusing and mixing the hair color incorrectly can be a danger to your hair or ruin the color for use.

Mix the chemicals together as directed. Also, wear gloves while handling the chemicals. Some kits come with their own gloves, while others make you buy your own. The chemicals can be damaging to your skin. Once you mix chemicals, make sure you use them right away.

Using the brush the comes in the kit--or a flat acrylic art brush if a brush is not supplied--carefully take strips of your hair in the desired width and completely saturate the hair with the color. Start at the back of your head and move to the front to prevent rubbing against the color in the front while trying to highlight the back. Although you can apply the highlights to your lower hairs as well, professionals recommend that you only do the top of your hair for the sun-kissed look.

Keep the highlighting chemicals in your hair for the recommended time in the directions manual and thoroughly rinse your hair. If a conditioning packet has been supplied to you with your kit be sure to use it because it can help keep your hair healthy and can increase the life of your color. You may also look into buying shampoo specifically for highlighted hair to help keep your highlighted hair vibrant in its color.
