How to Hold a Chinese Fan

While more primitive fans made from feathers or plant leaves were used in China for some time, the first true Chinese fan was created during the Yao dynasty and has been an important part of Chinese culture ever since. While the fan first had practical uses, it became more ornamental over time and eventually had a place in arts and entertainment. Opening and holding a fan gracefully was just the beginning of the techniques used while working with fans.

Hold the fan closed and facing downward. Use only three fingers; your index and middle should be in the front half while your thumb holds the fan steady on the back. Let your ring and pinky fingers extend up and out as if they are parts of the fan themselves.

Flick the fan open with enough force to open the folds all the way. Make sure your fingers aren't covering the folds so they may flick open properly. The decoration on the fan should be facing outward so the audience may see it. Curve your hand up until the fan covers your face and almost touches the forearm. This is the beginning pose before entering into any future moves.

Choose a fan that accentuates your outfit and makeup. Fans can be any color, have extra fabric near the end for flourishing, and they can connect to each other to make a larger fan. Pick a fan that will work well for your desired use.
