How to Identify a 1985 Johnson Outboard

Johnson Motors produces a series of outboard engines for boats. These engines range in size from very small 2-horsepower models to large 115-horsepower engines. Johnson has been making engines for decades and includes a date stamp in the engine's serial number code. Identifying a Johnson Outboard from 1985 is a matter of finding the stamp and reading the code, as well as seeing the Johnson label on the cowling.

Look at the sides of the outboard engine in question to find the large "Johnson" marking. Johnson engines include the Johnson label on both sides of the outboard cowling -- the cover that goes over the engine.

Pop the cowling locks open. Push the edge mechanisms up and off the lip of the engine to pop them off, then lift off the cowling to expose the engine.

Spray some degreaser onto the rag and wipe off the metal serial number plate found toward the back of the engine.

Look for a "C" and an "O", the second and third characters from the end of the model serial number stamp code. The "C" stands for 8 and the "O" for 5, indicating it is a 1985. The last number is the model run.
