How to Identify a Magnum 500

Introduced in 2003, the 500 magnum caliber handgun was the most powerful on the market. Developed by Smith & Wesson, the model 500 required a new frame size to accommodate the weight and power of the caliber. After being introduced, there were some who protested the legality and usage of the handgun, going as far as to call it a "Big Boomer" and a "Vest Buster."

Push the cylinder release latch, located above the grip on the left side of the gun, and push out the cylinder. Look at the gun's load capacity, 500 magnums hold five bullets in the cylinder because of the size of .500 caliber bullets.

Talk to a gun dealer if you are not able to locate the markings or open the cylinder. They will point them out to you and answer any other questions you might have about the handgun.
