How to Increase the Size of TrueCrypt Volume

TrueCrypt is a software application that protects important data by encrypting all or part of your hard drive. Once encrypted, a special key is required to decrypt and access the stored information. You cannot extend TrueCrypt volumes like normal partitions, but you can increase the size available to TrueCrypt by creating a larger encrypted volume that will contain your current files.
    • 1

Click "Start" and type "TrueCrypt" to locate it on the Start menu. Click "TrueCrypt" from the results to open the application.

    • 2

Click "Volumes" > "Create New Volume."

    • 3

Locate "Create a standard TrueCrypt volume" on the options list and click "Next."

    • 4

Click "Select File" and create a new file that will store your encrypted documents. You must create a new file and should not use your other volume's name unless you wish to completely overwrite it with new data.

    • 5

Click "Next" twice to proceed to the volume size screen.

    • 6

Enter a file size larger than your existing volume. This is the total amount of space this encrypted disk will ever be able to hold.

    • 7

Enter a password that you will use to access the disk. You must provide this password every time you want to access your data.

    • 8

Open the TrueCrypt window and click "Select File" under the "Volume" panel.

    • 9

Navigate to the file you created for your new volume and double-click it.

    • 10

Click an unassigned drive letter from the Volumes panel and click "Mount." Enter the password you created for the new TrueCrypt volume and click "OK." It will be mounted with this drive letter.

    • 11

Click "Start" > "Computer" and open the drive for your old TrueCrypt volume.

    • 12

Press "Ctrl" + "A" to highlight all files, then press "Ctrl" + "C" to copy them to the clipboard.

    • 13

Reopen the "Computer" section and double-click the drive letter of your new TrueCrypt drive.

    • 14

Press "Ctrl" + "V" to transfer your old volume's files to the new TrueCrypt drive.
