How To Inspect Glassware Before Use

Proper glassware inspection is important to your safety while you work in a laboratory. Glassware should be checked prior to working as well as after you have completed your work.
  • Broken and Defective Glassware

    • Before beginning an experiment, check your glassware for such cracks and chipped or jagged edges. While this is not a long or involved process, it is critical that you check carefully. Any damage to your containers could cause injury to yourself or others. Never use damaged glassware.

    Dirty Glassware

    • Any glassware used in the laboratory should be cleaned after use. Check to make sure that you are using clean glassware, as residues left over have the chance of an unwanted or even fatal reaction if you are doing another type of experiment. Cleaning should make the glassware suitable for your work.

    Post-Experiment

    • When you have completed your experiments, check your glassware to ensure that it is in good condition. Clean all glassware thoroughly for the next person to use.
