How to Install Disc Brake Rotors

Disc brake rotors are the round, metal plates that the brake pads squeeze and to which the calipers are mounted. Some rotors secure to the axle by the wheel and some rotors are secured to the axle by bolts. When installing the rotors, you must buy rotors that are the correct size for your vehicle. You can buy the rotors at any auto store. When you buy the rotors, take care to get the ones designed for your make and model vehicle.

Loosen all of the lug nuts on the wheels using the jack stand. Raise the vehicle off the ground and support it on jack stands.

Remove the wheels from the axle and set them aside. Loosen the bolts on the rear of the caliper and pull the caliper off the rotor.

Remove the nuts from the center of the rotor using the ratchet set, if needed, or pull the rotors off the axle. Place the new rotors onto the axle and secure the rotor using the nuts, if needed. Make sure that the rotor is in the frame connected to the axle that supports the caliper.

Place the caliper onto the rotor and tighten the bolts on the rear to secure the caliper. Replace the wheels on the axle. Replace the nuts to the wheels and tighten them. Lower the vehicle to the ground and completely tighten the wheel nuts.
