How to Install a Failed MSI With Returned Error Code 1603

A number of things causes the 1603 error to appear when using Symantec software. If you do not have the short file name creation turned on, this error appears when trying to load the Symantec software. A bad registry value also causes this error in the software package. Easily fix this problem yourself by using a couple of techniques recommended by Symantec to correct the failed MSI with the returned error code problem.
    • 1

Close all of the programs running in the background before starting the Symantec software.

    • 2

Click the "Start" button and then click the "Find" button. Type "TEMP" into the blank and press the "Enter" key. Open all of the "TEMP" folders and delete the files inside of them.

    • 3

Run the program. If there is still an error, continue with the following steps.

    • 4

Press the "Start" button and then click the "Run" box. Type "regedit" into the box and type "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem." Scroll to the "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation" entry. Set the key to "0" instead of "1."

    • 5

Insert the Symantec install computer disc into the computer. Click on the "InstmsiW.exe" file and follow the prompts to re-install the program on the computer.

    • 6

Run the Symantec software. This should clear up any error codes.
