How to Install an HD DirecTV Dish

DirecTV dishes that are over 5 years old aren't capable of receiving high definition video. The dish must be a 5-LNB (low noise block) dish with a compatible HD receiver. Installation of a 5-LNB dish receiver is usually done by a DirecTV technician, but it can be personally installed with the correct equipment.

Point the dish towards the southern sky. There can be no objects blocking the path. This includes, buildings, trees and poles.

Use an LNB tester to identify the best position for the dish to be installed. The LNB tester finds where the clearest and strongest signals are. The testers are affordable and necessary to receive the best possible transmissions.

Secure the dish to a surface. The tools necessary for this job depend on the location where the dish is to be installed. The dish can be attached to the side of a house, to a tree, on the roof, or on a pole specific to dish positioning.

Attach the dual RG-6 cable to the dish and run the cable to the inside of the house where the HD receiver is located. Dual RG-6 cable is used for DirecTV's highest quality connections. It provides better and faster bandwidth.

Attach the other end of the dual RG-6 cable to the HD receiver.

Secure the cable down to avoid any possible damage. Secure the cable to the house for house attachments. For dishes that are positioned away from the house, it is best to bury the cable so it isn't accidentally pulled on.
