How to Install Pennsylvania Bluestone

Pennsylvania Bluestone is one of many types of sandstone found in the area formed by the meeting boundaries of Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Its durability makes it ideal for use inside the house as floor tiles and outdoors for patio floors or walking areas around swimming pools. Installation of Pennsylvania Bluestone is a great do-it-yourself project that can be done over a long weekend with the help of a friend or family member.

Lay out the area you wish to pave and measure it. You will need the length of both sides and the width of both ends. Take the measurements to a stone quarry or home improvement center to help you determine how much stone you will need.

    • 2

Clear the site of anything that could prove to be an obstacle such as bushes or trees. Line the edges with markers to show exactly where you are going to dig.

    • 3

Begin digging at the far edge of the area. You will need to dig down about four inches in order to lay the stone correctly. Remove the dirt with a wheelbarrow.

    • 4

Spread the paver base at the farthest corner working outward. Lay the base only as you need it so it does not dry. The base should be two inches deep.

    • 5

Lay the stones from left to right and work from back to front. Use a level to make certain the stones are level.

    • 6

Fill in the gaps between the stones with sand or grout. You do not need to seal the stones as they come naturally sealed.
