How to Install Trailer Hitches on Vehicles

Installing a trailer hitch is a service offered by some professionals, but with some time and effort, the job can be done by about anyone at home. A trailer hitch is attached to the rear of a vehicle and is used when towing a trailer. Each trailer hitch comes with a set of directions for that particular make and model, but there is a general process that you can follow for all makes and models.
    • 1

Purchase the trailer hitch to fit the tow vehicle and the trailer being towed. Different hitches are recommended for different trailer grades. Find the towing guidelines and maximum towing capacity in the vehicle's user manual or manufacturer's website.

    • 2

Using the jack, lift the car as high as safely possible for working room. Secure with the jack stands. Climb under the vehicle and locate all the holes where the bolts can be inserted following the instructions included with the hitch. Drill holes if the instructions mention a hole the vehicle doesn't have.

    • 3

Drop the carriage bolt at this point, if the installation requires a carriage bolt. Sometimes two bolts that face downward through the frame of the car both should be placed before lining up the hitch.

    • 4

Place the hitch into position, lined up to insert bolts, under the vehicle frame. Use a jack stand to support the hitch if it's too heavy.

    • 5

Insert and tighten all nuts and bolts and use washers if the instructions specify. Remove the jacks and lower the vehicle. Additional assembly including installing wiring for brake lights might be required before legally towing a trailer.
